The Aviation Club at SLCC has planned an activity this month to take a tour of Hill Air Force Base on Oct. 19. The tour will include a tour of the control tower and will show SLCC students the contrast between commercial airports and military bases. At the base they will also listen to different military speakers talk about the difference between military airspace and commercial airspace.
This activity has been planned and organized by the club president, Shiloam Chapman, and faculty advisor, Fiona Silcox. The club has existed for two years now and was started by Professor Nolan Clifford to give an opportunity to all those interested in learning about aviation the opportunity to meet together to share their passion of flying.
"Our objective is to further the spirit of aviation among SLCC students. Our purpose is to promote a gathering of aviation enthusiasts wherein we can learn, experience, and dream of flight together. Our activities will include field trips, aviation competitions with other local schools, flying to particular locations, and guest speakers," as stated on the SLCC website.
The Aviation Club's past activities have included a tour of the facilities at Salt Lake International Airport, including the air control tower. Next month they plan on going to use a high altitude chamber located in Denver, Colorado. The purpose of this chamber is to see the individual effects that oxygen deprivation has on each person in case of flying at extremely high altitudes.
The club meets every Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Airport Campus to have a "movie day" where they watch videos about aviation. It also gives students the opportunity to watch planes at the airport and talk with the pilots. The Airport Campus is located at the Executive Terminal in General Aviation at the Salt Lake International Airport.
The club is available for all those interested in learning more about aviation. "It's a lot of fun and you meet a lot of interesting people," said Silcox. "Even if you are not interested in flying [the club] provides a great learning experience."
In order to receive formal training you must be enrolled in the club. To join you must show up to one of the meetings that occur on the first Friday of each month at 2:00 p.m. A $10 dollar fee is required at the time of joining and you will receive an Aviation Club t-shirt.
