College life is busy. SLCC students are attempting to balance classes, a job, and maybe a family, and students are finding little time for themselves.

Living a busy lifestyle can literally make a person ill. Everyone only has 24 hours in a day and therefore can only do so much. Many students at SLCC say that they feel stress almost every day.
"I feel like I have no time to eat...let alone workout," said SLCC student Jessie Cruz.

Believe it or not there is a way to have a healthy and busy lifestyle. Here are a few tips to help students get through the day in a healthy way.

It is very important to get a good nights rest. Body rejuvenation takes place only while sleeping. To get a good nights rest students may need to skip out on social engagements or doing chores, but bed time is the most important time of the day.

Many people wake up early, and many go straight for the caffeine. This, however, is a bad idea because studies have shown that caffeine increases stress hormones that persist throughout the day.

Drinking water is the key to getting healthy. Replacing sodas with water will not only cut unneeded calories, but will hydrate the body. Sipping water during class and in the car may be an alternative to eating junk food due to boredom.

It is easy just to grab a couple dollars and get a few candy bars from the snack dispenser outside the classrooms. Instead be prepared with granola bars, trail mix, and other healthy snack foods. Keeping bodies running on sugars and fats will only make a person tired. Snacking on health foods will provide energy and eliminate hunger pains keeping students from running down the street to McDonalds or Taco Bell for those fast food fixes.

It is possible to make time to workout. Being overweight or out of shape just makes a person have less energy through out the day. Doctors recommend that everyone should get at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular workout everyday. At the SLCC Redwood Campus there is a fitness center directly across from the library, it is free to all students. Keeping workout clothes in the car and utilizing breaks between classes for a brief workout will give students energy to boost them through the day. Also walk across campus instead of driving. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. All these actions will add up and help the body shape up.

Some students have put getting healthy and getting in shape on their priority list and find it is possible to be healthy and busy, and being busy is easier when healthy.

"I work out four to six times a week at Gold's Gym" said Heather Hansen who works 30 hours a week and is a full time student. "Right now I'm just trying to stay in shape; eventually I would like to do figure competitions."
