Since 1948, SLCC has been offering courses in health science. Currently, SLCC has an estimated 60,000 students enrolled for the fall 2006 semester With enrollment continuing to increase year after year, as well as the demand for professionals in the medical field, the new Health Science Center at SLCC will help meet increasing demand.

"We have a great relationship with Salt Lake Community College, and we are very pleased to provide support for their valuable medical education programs," said Nancy Nowak, vice president of clinical operations and chief nursing officer at Intermountain Healthcare. That company committed to a donation of $3 million to help complete the Health Science Center that is currently under construction at SLCC's Jordan Campus in August.

"We are excited to be a part of the new Health Science Center and look forward to collaborating with their nursing programs, as well as their educational programs for medical technicians and medical assistants," said Nowak.

The Health Science Center will be
approximately 151,000 square feet and will bring new cutting-edge technology to SLCC medical programs. Along with 15 new classrooms, the facility will also provide a fitness room, an aerobic/dance room and a physical therapy pool.

The center will also provide a wellness clinic, as well as a student health center that will be used to benefit the community by providing services to low-income families, while educating students at the SLCC Jordan Campus. In addition, the facility will provide a radiology clinic and an occupational/physical therapy clinic.

"An increase in teaching space will allow a 60 percent increase in the number of students admitted to the allied health disciplines, and the nursing program's enrollment capacity will nearly double," said Dr. Marlene Bacon, dean of the School of Health Sciences.

Currently, the health science programs are spread among six locations around the Salt Lake Valley. The Health Science Center will bring nine different health programs together, helping to more efficiently utilize SLCC's facilities as well as their teaching efforts. The nine programs will include biotechnology technician, medical assistant, medical administrative assistant, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, pharmacy technician, physical therapy assistant, radiological technology and surgical technology.

"I am so excited that IHC is willing to help SLCC with this project. I am planning on studying to become a radiological technician, and with the addition of these new facilities, I hope that the waiting list for entry into my program will be reduced," said Amanda Williams, student at SLCC.

Students that graduate from these programs will receive a two-year AAS degree, except for students graduating from the medical assistant and surgical technology programs, which are certification programs only.
