SLCC hosted its first college rodeo of the season this weekend, complete with steer roping and bull riding.

The rodeo was held at W. & M. Butterfield Park in Herriman on Sept 13 and 14. Three members of the college's rodeo team competed in the event. This is the first of 10 regional rodeos participants will compete in prior to finals to be held in June 2008. SLCC is part of the Rocky Mountain region in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

Marshall Mackay competed and placed in team roping and steer roping, Brittanee Newkirk competed and won first place in barrel racing. Stormy Henderson competed in goat tying and barrel racing. Jessica Lear competed in barrel racing. Haly Jo Sheehan competed in barrel racing and Ky Beckstead competed in breakaway roping.

Many SLCC students came out to support the rodeo team compete for the best time and score. For most students, it was the first time they had known SLCC had a rodeo team.

"I didn't know we had one," said SLCC Student Jason Demann. "I think it's sweet." Students agreed that the team competed really well, and despite some slight rain showers on Friday night, students enjoyed the rodeo.

"I like rodeos and horses," said SLCC student Michelle Pace. "I wish they had more."

"They seem really good," said Westminster student Colby Butchereit. "I think more people should know."

Most students who attended the rodeo said they came to the rodeo because it was something different from the usual school activities.

"It's something unique," said SLCC student Mckenzie Jessop.

The SLCC rodeo team and its members have been competing in regional and national rodeos for a number of years. Mackay said that he has been riding horses since he was 3 years old and loves the thrill of competing.

"It's a rush," said Lear. "I do if for the fun of it." Lear has also been riding horses since she was young and loves the feel of the wind while she is racing her horse around the barrel racing arena.

The rodeo club is mostly sponsored by the SLCC Student Association under Student Life & Leadership. Team members bring their own horses to the team which they use in the various events they compete in. According to Mackay, the team has around 30 horses total.

The team will start preparing for their next rodeo event to be held in Logan on Sept. 28 and 29.
