Utilizing the Library website

There are many resources available to students who are studying, researching, or doing projects at the SLCC libraries. There are more than just books, movies, magazines, anatomy models, and computers in the library. Another easily accessible resource can be accessed anywhere a computer is located. The online library website ELIE can be used as a resource for students and faculty alike in their studying and research endeavors.
The library offers a tremendous amount of resources at students' disposal. The SLCC Library and Media collections offer more than 99,094 print editions, 35,000 e-books, 75 electronic databases, 81 electronic reference titles, 30,774 media items and 700 periodicals available for student use. Other resources available are the computer labs, film viewing lab, white boards, anatomical models, and actual librarians. The librarians know the library inside out and can answer or help anyone with questions.
"The most important resource is the databases. This is where you can find journal articles," says Keith Slade. Slade is one of the many Reference Librarians in the Markosian Library. He works the reference desk on the north side of the main floor.
The databases can be found on any computer. The library website recently named ELIE meaning Electronic Library and Information Environment can be found at http://libweb.slcc.edu.
"The part of the website [that is helpful] for students is the Library Resources link in the center of the page. Students will be able to find a link to all of the most popular databases EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and SIRS," said Slade. These databases provide students with thousands of references and journal articles.
Need extra study material in any of the classes you are taking? The library has a solution to that problem too. "We have this new thing called LibGuides. They are guides on different subjects taught at the college. There are helpful study guides and links that direct you to different articles and websites," Slade continues. LibGuides were designed to provide students and faculty with access to credible resources in their given fields of study.
Ever have a research question that needs to be answered but don't feel like driving to the library? ELIE also has a solution to that dilemma. "Another new thing the library offers is the chat room called Ask a Librarian. So if you are at home studying and the library is open, you can click on the link and ask the librarians questions," said Slade.
When it comes down to studying itself Slade advises, "Just make sure you are consistent and have a study plan. Always come to us for help. Some students spend hours looking for something when we could have told them exactly where is was."
