The sixteenth nationally ranked men's basketball team took their first three home games this past week, two with dominating performances.
The Bruins home opener came against Western Wyoming on Nov. 10. SLCC won by 25, 71-46. The SLCC Tournament took place the weekend of Nov 13-14. The Bruins took on Hill Air Force Base on Friday night. The home team came away with a resounding win 112-43. On Saturday night the Bruins faced the Thunderbirds of Mesa Community College. This was the closest game, but the Bruins finished the sweep, 68-61.
The Western Wyoming game was a homecoming game for many Mustang players, as half their roster is from Utah. The Bruins came into their home opener 2-0 with two convincing wins. The Bruins came out and stepped on the throat of the Mustangs early pushing their halftime lead to 40-22. The second half SLCC let off of the gas pedal a bit and cruised to the 71-46 victory. The Bruins were led by Freshman Forward Collin Chiverton who has 28 points on 10-18 shooting and 4-8 from the three-point line. As a team SLCC shot a respectable 43 percent from the field. It was the defense that was the catalyst as they held the Mustangs to 27 percent from the field and forced them into 23 turnovers.
Coming into the Hill Air Force game you had a feeling it might get out of control early and often. The tallest player for Hill was maybe 6-3. The Bruins had a very distinct advantage. It showed early as SLCC jumped to a 53-21 halftime lead. The Bruins closed it off with the 112-43 final. SLCC had a mush more balanced attack as no one played more than 27 minutes and everybody played at least 12. The stats showed as much as five players were in double figures and two more had nine. The Bruins were able to shoot an absurd 61 percent from the field. Wil Carter and John Hayward-Mayhew lead the way with 17 points and eight rebounds a piece.
The Final game of the tournament matched the visitors from Mesa Community College against the undefeated Bruins. This game turned into the game of the tournament. Mesa had already knocked of Snow College the day before 61-48. Mesa came out and showed that they wanted to compete jumping to an early 5 point-lead. It was a game of runs though as SLCC pushed back with a run of their own to take the lead into halftime 38-31. The second half was a complete was each team scoring 30 points giving the Bruins the 68-61 win. It was the Bruins aggressive style that helped them get the win. The forced the thunderbirds into committing 27 fouls. This gave the Bruins an astounding 32 free throw attempts compared to the 15 Mesa shot. Sophomore Darian Norris led the team with 16 points and eight boards. Mesa was lead by Stephen Rogers and Eric Hunt who each had 18 points.
