Did you really just do that?

It's something we've all witnessed. As full-time students at Salt Lake Community College we pay a minimum of $1,395 for in-state tuition. And tack on a great deal more with books, fees, parking passes, and whatever else the school decides to charge us for. So why in the world do people choose to waste their education that they pay an arm and a leg for?

Exhibit A: A girl always comes to an unspecified class with her iPod on and earphones in. Now, it is perfectly common for people to walk around SLCC campuses with earphones in their ears listening to whatever it is that please them, but it seems that most people turn off their iPod and take out their headphones once class begins. But not this girl; she likes to be different and keep her headphones in and her music playing throughout the whole class. Maybe she needs the music to help her pay attention or something like that, but it seems pretty improbable, considering she pays no mind to anything that is going on in the classroom.

Exhibit B: This guy is a go-getter. He signs up for his classes bright and early at 8 AM. But it seems that he has a problem with getting a good night's sleep and falls asleep every morning during class.

It should be pretty obvious why Exhibit A is a little off. It seems that whatever is happening or being taught in class just simply isn't important. Maybe she knows it already. Maybe she just doesn't care. Either way, it seems pretty disrespectful to jam out during class. It seems a little crazy that our example is willing to pay nearly $1400 and even show up to class, only to listen to her music.

As for Exhibit B, it's a pretty safe bet that we have all seen, or even been, someone who sleeps through class. Unfortunately with the busy schedule most students deal with, sleep can take a back seat. Between work, families, school, and homework sleep can get put on the back burner. But once again, it's foolish to spend so much money along with time and effort to continually fall asleep.

My only advice to avoid being another exhibit is for you all is to take your education seriously. Do the obvious (or not so obvious) to be successful. Show up, listen (turn off your music), and do your homework. It is almost fool-proof. And, if you can, get a good night's sleep. Your body will thank you. Your brain will function better making it easier to listen, do homework, and study.
